Instagram Now Supports 3:4 Posts – Here's What You Need to Do
Instagram has just rolled out a game-changing update – it now officially supports the 3:4 aspect ratio for feed posts. This might seem like a small tweak, but for creators, brands and marketers, it's a big deal.
What’s Changed?
Until recently, Instagram's feed limited image height to 1350 pixels (a 4:5 aspect ratio). That meant many photos had to be cropped or resized – not ideal for mobile photographers and brands wanting full-screen impact.
But as of last week, Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio posts (1080x1440 pixels) the same ratio your phone camera likely uses by default.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced the update, saying:
“Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos – the format that almost every phone camera defaults to. When you upload a photo with that ratio, it’ll now appear just exactly as you shot it.”
Why This Update Matters
The 3:4 format takes up more vertical space on screen, giving your content more presence and grabbing user attention. If you're still using the older 4:5 (1080x1350) size, your posts could feel slightly cropped or less dynamic – and that can impact engagement.
Taller posts = better visibility = higher engagement.
What You Should Do
If you manage your own content, now’s the time to:
Export your visuals at 1080x1440px
Frame content so it works well on both the feed and the grid
Stop using outdated dimensions that get less traction
